The Evolution of the Mental Health Self-Defence® Method

At the Triangle Foundation, our Mental Health Self-Defence® Method did not appear overnight. It has evolved over more than three decades of professional practice, observation, and continuous learning within the fields of stress prevention, resilience training, and wellbeing education.

From the outset, our work has been grounded in a preventative philosophy: prevention is better than cure. Rather than focusing solely on symptom management, we have consistently explored the underlying drivers of stress, anxiety, and anxiety-based low mood. Through structured mentoring, workplace programmes, and community education, patterns began to emerge. Clients who were equipped with practical cognitive tools, structured relaxation methods, and clear self-management frameworks demonstrated meaningful improvements in resilience and recovery.

Over time, advances in neuroscience and gut-brain research further strengthened our understanding. Evidence linking lifestyle factors, inflammation, microbiome balance, and psychological wellbeing has allowed us to refine and modernise the Method. What began as a structured stress-management framework has grown into a comprehensive, evidence-informed model of Mental Health Self-Defence® empowering individuals to identify psychological stressors early, regulate physiological responses, and build long-term resilience.

Today, the Method integrates:

• Structured cognitive and behavioural self-management techniques
• Guided relaxation and visualisation processes
• Lifestyle and wellbeing education
• Emerging research into the gut-brain axis
• Practical resilience-building exercises

We continue to refine our approach in line with responsible research and professional standards. Our commitment remains clear: to provide accessible, preventative mental health education rooted in science, practicality, and human understanding.
